Remembering beautiful Millie Bailey

Vivian Mildred Bailey
February 3, 1918 - May 1, 2022

Everyone leaves a legacy but rarely does anybody leave one as long and as rich as Vivian “Millie” Bailey. The life lessons she learned, and the life lessons she passed along to our community, could fill an encyclopedia. From her military career, to her support for veterans, to her involvement with the police foundation, her constant support for students in a local elementary school, she was never reluctant to help those who just needed a helping hand. Through those acts and many more, her heart of gold was always on display. Standing up for herself and others…and jumping out of an airplane at the age of 102 years old!!…displayed her courage of steel.

Millie curated wonderful and meaningful treasures throughout her years and beautifully displayed them in her home with humility. Her story unfolded before my eyes as I walked through her entrance hallway and into her kitchen and living area. Her walls were adorned with treasured photos and special recognitions that allowed me to catch a glimpse of all the wonderful places she had traveled. One beautiful object that I’ll always remember her holding and talking about was a pillow she made using the neckties that were once worn by her late husband, Bill. It was absolutely beautiful. I know Bill is thrilled to have her by his side again.

This past November, Millie agreed to allow me to “arrest” her for a fundraiser I hosted to raise money for The Arc of Howard County. She did this so people could "post her bail", which meant donations would be raised for the cause. We didn’t expect her to join us at the fundraiser, didn’t think a loud, crowded restaurant would be appealing to her, but she did (thank you, Kim)! Always going above and beyond to help others. When I snapped a picture of her “behind bars” we had to convince her to look mad because she just wanted to flash her beautiful smile.

Her eyes were the eyes of life’s experiences and wisdom. Her smile was the smile of a gracious, grateful, and giving woman. Oh, Millie, how we love you. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us.

The next time you go to the Columbia Lakefront, go sit on the bench at Millie Bailey Park. Think of what the park meant to her and think of what it will mean to us for generations to come.

Rest in Peace, beautiful Millie. I'm so grateful to have known you.
