Santa Paws: Pet Portraits with a Purpose

Santa Paws brought an unforgettable collection of pets and people to our studio. It was a fun way to celebrate our first holiday season in our new studio. Families came in for holiday portraits with their beloved companions, including three adorable hedgehogs!!!...a first for me! One of those hedgehogs had three legs and had been a cheerleader during the Puppy Bowl. I still smile looking at her portrait in that purple tutu.

We created Santa Paws to give families a fun way to celebrate the pets they love while helping local animals in need. A portion of each portrait session supported the Animal Welfare Society of Howard County, and our generous clients brought donations of dog food as well.

Together, we raised more than $500 and collected a trunk full of donated food. Local businesses helped make the event even more special with treats, gifts, and raffle prizes. Thank you to Bark! Pawsitive Petfood, Dogs & Company, Dogtopia, Petco, PetSmart, and WorkPlayBark for joining us.

My daughters helped organize Santa Paws and pitched in throughout the fundraiser. They also had an agenda of their own: convincing their dad and me that our family needed a dog. They gave us two presentations, complete with spreadsheets of girl and boy names and a poll to decide what kind of dog we should adopt. Majority rules, apparently.

On January 19, 2013, the girls came with me to deliver the money, food, and blankets. We joked that we might come home with a puppy. After all that preparation, perhaps we should have known what would happen: we adopted Scout.

Thank you to every family who trusted me with portraits of their beloved pet and helped make Santa Paws possible. Looking back, I remember the fun we had in the studio, the generosity everyone showed, and the day Scout became part of our family.
